The process of buying property in Portugal consists of two parts or procedures. Once the offer is accepted a written contract is signed called a Contrato Promessa Compra e Venda or a promissory contract of purchase, containing the terms of the sale and a non-refundable deposit of usually 10%. The remainder of the agreed sale price to be paid on the date of the notarised deed of sale, or escritura.

*Legal representation is highly recommended and is common practice.
